For PTs and PTAs who teach yoga or Pilates

Frequently asked questions

How coverage works, how to get set up, and who can provide care.

Your clients and coverage

Does my client need a prescription?

Yes. The client needs a prescription for physical therapy before their first covered session. Most clients get one from their own physician.

What if my client doesn't have a doctor, or can't get in soon?

We can set up a telemed visit with a licensed provider. If physical therapy is appropriate, the provider writes the prescription and the client can start with you.

What will my client pay?

The client pays their plan's usual cost share for a PT office visit: a copay, coinsurance, or whatever is left on their deductible. If their plan is out-of-network, their cost share can be higher. We check their benefits before the first session and tell them what to expect.

Does my client's plan need to be in-network?

No. We check benefits for every client before their first session, whether their plan is in-network or out-of-network.

Can clients in my classes be covered?

A class taken for fitness is paid out of pocket. If a client has a prescription, a diagnosed condition, and a plan of care from the PT, their physical therapy can be billed to insurance. That's true in a class setting too.

How do clients find out about it?

Once your studio is set up, it posts a sign telling clients their sessions may be covered through physical therapy. Clients with pain or an injury can ask you or the studio about it.

Getting set up

How do I bring this to my studio owner?

Talk with your studio owner about PeteHealth, then add the studio's details to your application. We'll follow up with the owner about next steps, and you can join that conversation.

Where can I see clients?

In your studio, in the client's home, or in your home. During onboarding, we'll confirm that your studio or home is set up as a treatment location.

Who can join?

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants with an active California license. PTAs work with a supervising PT, who does the evaluation and sets the plan of care.

Who can provide care, and what supervision is required?

  • PT: treats clients directly. No supervision is required.
  • PTA: treats clients under a supervising PT. The PT does not need to be on site.
  • Aide: a certified yoga or Pilates instructor can assist as an aide. For any patient-related task, the PT must be in the same facility, nearby, and readily available at all times.
